History of Halloween Traditions: From Costumes to Candy
Originally, Halloween was a tradition by ancient civilizations where people would put on costumes and light bonfires to ward off ghosts. This tradition was started over 2,000 years ago in modern-day Ireland. Not only was it known for the day where ghosts would come back to haunt the living, but it was simply known as the day of death in general, specifically human death. Halloween night, October 31st, was the day in which the people believed that ghosts would come back from the land of the dead and return to earth.
Slowly over time, the idea of burning fires and wearing costumes became a fun activity rather than one necessary to protect the community. Lighting bonfires slowly became lighting jack o lanterns. Wearing costumes to ward off ghosts slowly became dressing up as them and going house to house in search of candy. Being scared of all of the monsters that come along with the idea of Halloween slowly became trying to intentionally scare others with them.
Ready to enjoy the evolved traditions of Halloween, Central Regional is excited for its swift approach. With Halloween arriving, Central is holding numerous of our own fun activities available for the students. For one, a few days before Halloween on Tuesday, October 28th, the high school offers a cheap Halloween movie night for just five dollars to enter and a dollar for each snack on hand, including candy, popcorn, sodas, and much more. Countless students can attend to see the viewing of Coraline with their friends, families, dates, or whoever’s interested in enjoying the film. On top of this, on Halloween day, the high school will be holding a costume contest. There are various categories for the competition, including most creative, scariest, and overall best costume. Central Regional is excited to hold these events with its students and we can’t wait to experience yet another amazing Halloween with everyone.
