NJGPA: Stress Free Strategies
The NJGPA on March 17th, 18th, and 19th is a big test to prepare for, as it is a graduation requirement to pass for juniors. Since this is such a big test, all juniors need to adequately prepare and do the best they can. During the test there are some simple strategies to be in the best mindset for the best results. A simple way to get your mind focused if you find yourself zoning out, or unable to focus, is to take a second to collect your thoughts and breathe.
When you first sit down for the test, get yourself settled and have all the tools you need. Don´t rush through, take your time and carefully read through the entire question. Another tip is to read the question before the passage in the English section. Knowing what you’re looking for prior to reading will help your mind search for that answer while reading and eliminates the time you take per question. If you are unaware of the answer, never leave it blank. There is no penalty to guessing, so give it the best shot you can. Sometimes when you have a question and really have no clue how to begin or finish the question, pick a letter for the day. Which means if you do not know or are quickly running out of time click that letter in the multiple choice questions, it is often B or C and you have roughly a 26% chance of getting more questions correct with those letters. For the math section of the test, oftentimes there are multiple parts, so don´t skip through and fully look at the questions. Study commonly used formulas and write them on your scrap paper when you receive it. In the written section using strong word choice and taking time to gather all the information is crucial. When writing essays or answering short questions be sure to check your punctuation and spelling as well as completing every thought.
When under stress/anxiety people often forget to complete their thoughts, so be sure to have a positive mindset and be confident in yourself and your answers. On multiple choice questions read through all the possible answers and eliminate the ones you know it can’t be. Once you do that, trust your gut and be sure of yourself that you know the right answer. Remember to be sure of yourself and Good Luck Juniors!
